Black Genealogy Volume 24, Issue 2, April/May/June 2023
The Birmingham African American Genealogy Group (BAAGG) recently celebrated Black Heritage Month with a focus on "Black Resistance," featuring presentations from notable speakers like Barry McNealy of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Tafeni English-Relf from the Southern Poverty Law Center. The event highlighted the importance of recognizing African contributions as central to human history and the ongoing fight against racial injustice. The celebration also included member highlights, such as the commemoration of Bloody Sunday and honoring the achievements of local chemist Darryl Love, alongside educational resources and a call for community involvement in preserving Black heritage.

Geraldine Winfield Collins, 70+ years old. When did you come to Titusville? I was born in our home at 622 Omega Street. Dr. McCoy, who lived across the street from us with his mother, delivered me. We moved to where I live now in 1940. Daddy did not know that my mother had been saving money to get this house. We were able to buy it and move in that December.

Thomasene Shambray, 40+ years. Ms. Shambray was the second of four children. “I was between the two boys. Then my parents had a baby girl when I was a teenager.” Her dad was a steelworker and her mom was a schoolteacher, until she left the profession to pursue her true calling full-time as a seamstress.

Roosevelt Hatcher, Sr., 61 yrs. When Roosevelt Hatcher moved into his bungalow-style home off Goldwire Street in 1961, new modern housing was going up all around, his paved street was surrounded by dirt roads, and the site where Sixth Avenue Baptist Church now stands was a home for unwed mothers.

James Bradley, 15 years. I have always enjoyed art, and I concentrated on graphic arts when I was in college at Alabama State University. I love challenges and trying new things, so after college I worked at a lot of different companies.
