Mission Statement
The Birmingham African American Genealogy Group, Inc. is the oldest African American genealogy group in the state of Alabama. Its purpose is to encourage genealogical and family research among individuals and the community with the objective of seeing African Americans become aware of their history and heritage.
We teach and stress the importance of supporting various libraries, museums and other repositories with the preservation and maintenance of their collections.
We strive to stimulate the membership and general public to research, study, and record their family's histories.
To this end, we offer seminars and monthly members educational classes. Lastly, we promote and maintain ethical standards in genealogical research and publications.
History
In 1999, Josephine Martin and Mary Jones-Fitts founded the Birmingham Alabama American Genealogy Study Group. At the time, there were an ever increasing number of African Americans who expressed a desire to research their families and their "roots" in the Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama area.
They collaborated with the Birmingham Genealogy Society and under their umbrella, the BAAGSG was born. The first meeting was held in February 1999, at the Birmingham Public Library.
In 2013, the group became incorporated in the state of Alabama and the name was changed to the Birmingham African American Genealogy Group, Inc. We are a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. Our tax identification number is EIN 86-1099545.
