John L. Lanier Jr. Scholarship

The John L Lanier Jr Scholarship is given to a High School Senior who will be entering College in the Fall. The scholarship was named after Birmingham African American Genealogy Group instructor, researcher, member, educator, and community leader who loved to make sure that students know about African American History. He encourages the community to donate and support African American Studies and was in contact with the Superintendents of Birmingham City School System where he introduced the program into the schools and founded a 501c3 organization. He was always smiling, sharing fun facts related to genealogy, and the scholarship fund. He was a mentor to the community and always promoted books and reading in the classrooms. The John L Lanier Jr Scholarship is awarded to the best and most prepared student who completed the Family History July Class offered by the Birmingham African American Genealogy Group.
